Energy Storage & On-Site Demand Management

At present, the vast majority of commercial buildings rely on national grids to provide electricity, demand for this electricity is currently high, yet it is expected to grow further, with over 60% increases in demand predicted by 2030.

The increase in demand requires the electricity grids to develop and expand the grid networks, with more cabling and pylons to support usage, a cost which is ultimately passed onto electricity users bills. The increase in demand also leads to greater unreliability of supply as users add to the strain of the networks.

These problems, coupled with the volatile nature of renewable generation sources, which are now being commonly utilised– solar and wind for example generate little amounts of power if the sun doesn’t shine or wind doesn’t blow – highlights the need for flexibility and greater control of electricity usage.

Energy Storage and Renewable Generation

Powerstar Virtue can be integrated with On-Site Renewable Energy Generation to combine the energy saved from the voltage optimisation system with that generated from the renewable energy source. As a result, users can switch to the stored supply at any time they wish, as well as ensuring a constant and reliable energy supply

Virtual Power
Due to the exceptionally easy way in which the availability of power can be predicted, Powerstar Virtue, can in effect, act as a Virtual Power Station (VPS). With this capability, users are able to use stored energy during times of high peak tariffs, whilst participating in national grid led initiatives such as Demand Response and Peak Shaving. The future protection and security of energy supply will continually need innovative energy saving technologies to reduce the growing demand and strain placed on energy infrastructure. Governments and Utility Companies will soon be turning to companies of all sizes and provide incentives to give up some of their energy demands in peak seasons/ times to ultimately free up energy to pass on down the line rather than burning more fossil fuels, however more to the point, take the burden off an already weakened National Grid. Energy Reduction initiatives and schemes are already in place to support the transition to a lower energy consumer.

Development of systems available: KW’s – MW’s – GW’s – TW’s and beyond…

Integrating energy storage with renewable energy is not a new concept and there are numerous cases of this technology being implemented. However, these are rarely for the commercial sector and are mainly used to store renewable energy for use in peak shaving and load management.  This is mainly due to the intermittent nature of current renewable generation which make it difficult to predict how much energy there will be to store in an energy storage medium.

Powerstar VIRTUE represents a unique solution that makes renewable energy reliable, allowing users to confidently save and store electricity generated from both Voltage Optimisation Technology and renewable energy and switch to this at any time.

On-site renewable sources can be integrated with Powerstar Virtue to provide maximum cost benefit, this includes:

• Eliminating the need for inverters on renewables

• Reducing the cost of initial renewable install

• Increasing the return on investment levels of renewable installations

• Storing energy generated by on-site renewable technologies

Consequently, by combining the unique design of the Powerstar VO System with VIRTUE Storage and Demand Technology, a renewable energy system is better protected from the nuisances received from the utility. Better performance, better returns, increased reliability! Maximise your returns on energy generation.

Powerstar Virtue uses the negative power feedback (back EMF) generated by a Powerstar voltage optimisation system to divert saved energy into a storage medium. Energy generated from on-site renewable generation can also be diverted into the same storage medium.

By integrating energy storage with renewable energy a certain amount of energy will always be available in the batteries used, therefore the facility will always have enough energy stored so that when supply from the grid is interrupted unexpectedly, the building can still be fully supported.

Powerstar VIRTUE also allows users to act as a Virtual Power Station (VPS), making informed decisions on when stored energy should be used, which will allows electricity costs to be significantly reduced.

Effects of Powerstar Virtue on sites with Renewable Generation

The charts here on right show a typical commercial facility fitted with 200kW solar panels on a particularly sunny summers day. The graph on the left hand side illustrates a load profile when Powerstar Virtue is not installed, highlighting that the direct effect of solar on the load profile is substantial, reducing the stores overall load consumption of electricity of 32.6%. However the majority of this load reduction occurs during non-peak hours, with solar only reducing the load requirement of the store during peak tariff times by 18%.

The graphs on the top right hand side shows a typical load profile when Powerstar Virtue is installed.

By storing the solar produced during the low and medial tariff periods it is possible to reduce the load to zero at peak tariff times. Therefore allowing the site to become completely grid independent.

The graph (bottom right) shows Powerstar Virtue utilising both negative power and solar power in such as way as to prevent the site ever demanding more than 100kWh per half hour of energy from the grid, as well as removing the site completely from the grid during peak tariff.

The charts (on right here) show a typical load profile for a commercial store.

The green lines indicate low-tariff periods, the yellow lines represents medial tariff periods and the red lines the indicates the high peak tariff periods. Therefore the green shaded block section on the left hand chart illustrates the region that the facility needs to avoid to ensure it does not incur highest costs and inconsistent supply.

The chart illustrates how the Powerstar Virtue Energy Storage System can enable the facility to come off-grid through the peak demand period by powering the facility through the energy storage system. The rest of the load profile remains unaltered, because the storage medium was charged using the induced negative power, not power from the grid.

Therefore this facility is not only saving money, but they are also directly reducing kWh usage, both for themselves and for the grid.

Virtual Power Stations or Virtual Power Plants (VPS/VPP) can be described as an ‘internet of energy’,
tapping existing grid networks to tailor electricity supply and demand services.

VPS’s/VPP’s maximise value for both the end user and the distribution utility by using a sophisticated set of software based systems.

They are dynamic, deliver value in real time and can react quickly to ever changing customer loads.
Virtual Power Stations can also match load fluctuations through forecasting, advance metering and computerised control, as well as performing real-time optimisation of energy sources.

Becoming a Virtual Powerstar Station through Powerstar Virtue

By allowing a site to act as a Virtual Power Station / Virtual Power Plant, Powerstar Virtue enables the provision of system services in the transmission network, e.g. allowing control power in the so-called minute reserve range, to be organised by combining emergency generating units or electrical end use equipment.

The VPS/VPP aggregates the electrical output from a multitude of plants and makes this supply available to the transmission system operator. If requested, the Virtual Power Station controls the immediate dispatch of the connected plants, thus contributing to grid stability.

With increasing amount of renewable generation on the grid and the continuing rise in demand for distributed energy, having the ability to act as a Virtual Power Station to ensure balanced loads, smooth variability of supply, and integration of diverse energy generation resources into the supply is a significant benefit for electricity users and electricity providers alike.
